“Wollongong sits where the Illawarra escarpment meets the sea,  a city of surprising beauty, world-class surf, excellent food, and one of the most dramatic coastlines in New South Wales.”

Sydney’s Most Underrated Day Trip

Just 80 kilometres south of Sydney, Wollongong (or “the Gong”, as locals call it with unmistakeable affection) is one of the most rewarding day trips available from the city. The journey south by train is one of the finest rail routes in Australia, hugging the sandstone escarpment above the Illawarra coast before descending through dense rainforest to the coastal plain. What awaits is a city of real character: excellent beaches patrolled by some of Australia’s oldest surf lifesaving clubs, a thriving café and restaurant scene, the beautiful Port Kembla harbour, and a coastal walking track that rivals anything Sydney offers.

The Grand Pacific Drive

If you have a car, the drive from Sydney to Wollongong via the Royal National Park and the Grand Pacific Drive is one of the great Australian coastal road experiences. The Sea Cliff Bridge , a cantilevered highway bridge that curves over the Pacific above sheer sandstone cliffs, has become one of the most photographed pieces of engineering in New South Wales, and rightly so. The drive along the escarpment edge, with the Pacific shimmering below and the forest pressing close on the other side, takes a little longer than the motorway route but is worth every extra minute.

Wollongong’s Beaches and Surf Culture

Wollongong is blessed with more than 17 beaches within easy reach of the city centre, and its surf lifesaving clubs, including the famous North Wollongong and City Beach clubs, are among the oldest in the world. North Beach, City Beach, and Belmore Basin offer good swimming, while the northern beaches toward Thirroul attract more experienced surfers. The rock pools at the base of the cliff at Coalcliff are extraordinary, and the walk along the Bald Hill headland at Stanwell Park delivers views that will make you immediately understand why people choose to live here.
