Last weekend, my family and I flew down from sunny Cairns for a weekend escape to Sydney. With my husband and our adventurous four-year-old son in tow, we were excited for two days of exploring before they flew back Sunday night while I stayed on for work.

Friday: Arrival and Settling In

We touched down in Sydney late Friday afternoon, buzzing with excitement. After an easy train ride, we checked into the Hyatt Regency Sydney in Darling Harbour. The views from our room were incredible, and we couldn’t wait to start exploring Sydney.

Saturday: Ferries, Zoos, and Iconic Views

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we set off with our Hop On Hop Off Harbour Explorer: 2-Day Pass + Taronga Zoo entry in hand. First stop: Taronga Zoo. Visiting Sydney just wouldn’t feel complete without seeing this iconic spot!

The ferry ride itself was an experience, offering spectacular views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Once at Taronga Zoo, we spent over three hours exploring, though we could’ve easily stayed longer. My son was mesmerised by the giraffes, especially with the Sydney Harbour Bridge perfectly framed behind them—a truly iconic sight.

Sunday: Markets, Beaches, and Playgrounds

On Sunday morning, we hopped back on the ferry and cruised over to Manly Beach. It was a gorgeous day, and the markets were in full swing. I couldn’t resist picking up a cute pair of handcrafted earrings—a perfect keepsake.

After soaking in the beach vibes, we returned to Darling Harbour for some laid-back family fun. We visited the Wax Museum, where my son was equal parts amazed and confused by the lifelike figures.

The highlight of the afternoon, though, was the Darling Harbour Playground. We spent well over an hour there while our son climbed, slid, and explored every inch of the play area. Our son absolutely loved it, and it’s a fantastic spot for families to relax and have fun.

Saying Goodbye

As Sunday evening approached, we enjoyed one last family dinner by the harbour before my husband and son headed to the airport. As much as I love my family, I was looking forward to some me-time and a bit of shopping solo on Monday morning before my work commitments.

Sydney turned out to be such a fun weekend getaway for our family—a mix of iconic sights, kid-friendly activities, and unforgettable views. If you’re planning a family getaway, be sure to add Darling Harbour, Taronga Zoo, and Manly Beach to your itinerary—you won’t regret it!
